David Irvine (AO) currently sits on the Foreign Investment Review Board whose role is to advise the Treasurer and the Government on Australia’s Foreign Investment Policy and its administration. Mr Irvine is also a member of the Advisory Council of the National Archives of Australia. Prior to this, Mr Irvine was Director-General of Security in charge of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) from 2009 to 2014, and a member of the Board of the Australian Crime Commission from 2009 to 2014. He was also Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) from 2003 to 2009.
Mr Irvine served with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (or its antecedents) for 33 years from 1970, with a professional focus on Australia’s relations with the Asia-Pacific region. He was Australia’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea from 1996 to 1999, and Australian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, North Korea and Mongolia from 2000 to 2003. Mr Irvine was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2005, for services to the promotion of Australia’s international relations.
