Darren Farmer

Initiated in Martu culture (Puntu), Darren Farmer was elected as the youngest ever Australian and Torres Island Commissioner in the 1990s. Mr Farmer assisted his first contact elders and Central Deserts Native Title Services in fighting a major land rights claim by the Birriliburu-Martu people for over two decades. They finally won a landmark Native Title Exclusive Determination with full natural resources rights against the Western Australian Government in December 2014, and the State withdrew its final avenue to resource appeal in 2016 with the Martu people now owning the resource.
