Roc’s appointment of Bruce Clement to the newly created position of chief operating officer could be more of a case of "watch this space" than of a promotion.
Western Australia has an abundance of gas and explorers are looking for more, both offshore and onshore, but there are questions over how much growth the industry can sustain.
Junior producer AWE has claimed a new gas discovery in the Mid West could be the largest conventional onshore gas discovery in Western Australia in 50 years.
AWE and Origin Energy plan to spend $17.5 million on the first stage of their Waitsia onshore gas project in the Perth Basin after an offtake agreement was finalised with Alinta Energy.
Shares in oil and gas company AWE have rallied on news it has sold its stake in the Sugarloaf project in the US for $US190 million ($A271 million).
Four Mid West companies have won nearly $6 million in contracts for work on AWE's Waitsia project, where first gas is expected in the third quarter of this year.

Beach Energy has recorded a sizeable drop in production and profit but claims strong project progress despite lowering its financial year 2024 targets.
Beach Energy reported a 12 per cent revenue drop last quarter, citing a “disappointing” drop in east coast uptake for its product and singling out Otway Basin customer Origin Energy.
Beach Energy announced its production was down 4 per cent during the second quarter of the 2024 financial year, citing planned downtime at its Kupe and Lang Lang gas plants.
