Ushering in a new era of social responsibility in mining
Traditionally the FIFO industry has been a male-dominated industry, but in recent times, more and more female workers have entered the front-line workforce.
Bill Johnston is the Labor Party Member of the Western Australia Legislative Assembly for the new seat of Cannington.
He was the Minister for Asian Engagement; Electoral Affairs; Commerce and Industrial Relations, Mines and Petroleum; and Energy in the McGowan government following Labor's win in the 2017 state election. Following the 2021 state election, he became the Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Energy, and Corrective Services. In the December 2021 cabinet reshuffle, Mr Johnston added Industrial Relations to his portfolio.
Following the resignation of Mr McGowan in June 2023, Mr Johnston became the Minister for Mines & Petroleum, Energy, Hydrogen Industry and Industrial Relations in the Cook government. In December 2023, he announced his departure from cabinet before quitting politics at the 2025 election.
Prior to entering Parliament in 2008, Mr Johnston spent seven years as the state secretary of WA Labor and was a former senior official of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association - the union representing retail and warehouse workers.
