Perth surf park a step closer to $28m takeoff
A private Perth company led by former oil and gas executive Andrew Ross is close to realising its vision of building artificial wave parks across Australia.
Andrew Ross is a Perth lawyer and business executive who was the founder and chair of URBNSURF, a Fremantle-based company developing surf parks in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. He left URBNSURF in July 2020 to run Aventuur's Perth office. Aventuur is a US-based surf park business looking to establish its Australia and Pacific headquarters in Perth, with plans to develop surf parks in multiple cities in the region including the proposed Cockburn surf park in Western Australia.
Before establishing URBNSURF in 2013, he had been managing director ASX-listed Elixir Petroleum (2007-2012) and prior to that ran private equity-backed Cape Energy SA (2004-2007). Mr Ross spent several years as a corporate finance director of merchant banking group Strand Hanson in London and acted as In-house counsel for Sibir Energy, working in the UK and Russia.
In 2023 Mr Ross became the inaugural chair of newly-formed tourism body Cockburn Destination Advisory Group which aims to foster collaboration, leverage partnerships and encourage participation by stakeholders to attract tourism customers and investment to the City of Cockburn.
Mr Ross is a qualified lawyer and holds a Bachelor of Commerce. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

A private Perth company led by former oil and gas executive Andrew Ross is close to realising its vision of building artificial wave parks across Australia.
The McGowan government has brought a sudden end to long-running plans for a $28 million wave park on the Swan River, ironically just one day after the Tourism Council WA complained that the wave park was one of 16 new tourist experiences being held up by government red tape.
US-based surf park business Aventuur is setting up a regional headquarters in Perth as it awaits a decision on whether it will develop and operate the proposed Cockburn surf park.
Aventuur has been named the preferred proponent to develop and operate a long-mooted surf park in Perth’s southern suburbs.
Western Australia's first surf park is expected to open in 2025 with the state government to lease a 5.7 hectare lot to US-based proponent Aventuur.
The environmental watchdog has decided not to assess the $100 million Perth Surf Park project, which is proposed to be built on a 5.7-hectare lot in Jandakot.
A development panel has given Aventuur the green light to build the first surf park in Western Australia, with the attraction estimated to cost $100 million.
Our weekly appointments wrap includes Anni Browning, Annie Fogarty, Andrew Ross, Linda Wayman, Ian Horne, Georgina Richter, Steve Chapman, Diana Kubicki, Drew Mayhills, Jo Thomas and Jonathan Phillips.
Ground could soon break for WA’s first surf park, and its owners are working to bring world class surfers and musicians to the venue.
Pursuing net zero carbon targets and implementing sustainability strategies are the environment sector’s chief goals.
The proponent of the state’s first surf park is a step closer to making the venue an Olympic training ground, bolstered by a partnership between Aventuur and Surfing WA.
A $10 million loan note, with unique user benefits, is being pitched to wave-riding locals as part of the long-awaited Perth Surf Park project's $100 million fundraising effort.
