The West Australian was first published in 1833 and is the only daily metropolitan newspaper in WA. It is owned by Seven West Media, a listed national multi-platform media business. The West Australian is a tabloid-format newspaper published Monday to Friday, with the Saturday publication known as The Weekend West since 2010. Seven West Media was created through the acquisition of Seven Media Group by West Australian Newspapers Holdings Limited (WAN) as approved by WAN shareholders on 11 April 2011. The entity's financials are still detailed in the SWM annual report, despite it contributing to the broader company's consolidated results.
