Unions, academics at odds on power reform
Securing union support for his bid to introduce competition into the local electricity retailing market will be a major test of Ben Wyatt’s political and negotiating skills.
Dean Nalder was appointed WA's Shadow Treasurer, Shadow Minister for Finance & Energy under Liza Harvey's Shadow Cabinet in 2019. He relinquished the Finance portfolio in a cabinet reshuffle in February 2020, and the Shadow Treasury position in December 2020 following his decision to retire at the 2021 state elections.
Mr Nalder has been the Liberal Party Member of the Legislative Assembly for Bateman since 2017. He had formerly represented the seat of Alfred Cove from 2013 until it was abolished in 2017. Mr Nalder served as a minister in the Barnett Liberal government from March 2014 to September 2016. He was Minister of Transport, Minister for Finance, and Minister for Agriculture & Food. However, Mr Nalder was stripped of the finance portfolio in late 2014 after being found to have a conflict of interest.
Prior to entering politics, Mr Nalder held senior corporate roles at ANZ Banking Group and Australia Post. Between 1988 and 1991 Mr Nalder played semi-professional Australian rules football, appearing in 30 matches for South Fremantle in the West Australian Football League.
He holds a Bachelor of Business in Economics & Financial Management from Curtin University of Technology and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance from the Securities Institute of Australia.
